Description:
The Direct Funded Respite Program is offered through the Children's Community Network and provides funding assistance to parents/guardians of children (0-18) with a disability. These funds can be utilized to cover respite fees, including, but not limited to, the hiring of a CHAP Worker.
What is Respite Care?
Respite care is a family support service that provides temporary relief from the physical and emotional demands invlolved in caring for a family member who has a disability. Respite creates greater opportunities for all familiy members to live actively and participate in community activities, and allows parents/guardians time for themselves.
Respite can be informal (i.e. best start hubs, play groups), integrated, or specialized (i.e. centre or family based service).
In-home Respite: CHAP Workers go into the individual's home.
Out-of-home Respite: CHAP Workers take the individual out of the home. Activities may include accompanying the child to a camp, or bringing the child on an outing.
CHAP Worker: Respite workers who have been screened by the CHAP Program. Their role is to provide a caring, safe environment for a child with special needs over a specific length of time.
What can I use the funding for?
• Summer day and overnight camp fees
• Community recreational program fees
• To hire a CHAP Worker to provide one to one relief
Who is eligible?
Any parent or guardian whose child has documentation from a professional confirming the child's developmental and/or physical disability and functional limitations will be eligible. Social Workers and Occupational Therapists will be added to the list of professionals who can document the disability.
How do I apply?
Families interested in obtaining respite funding are required to complete a Respite Eligibility Tool (RET) with their Service Coordinator at the Children's Community Network.
How are funding decisions made?
Allocations are determined based on the level of need of the child and the family as determined by the Eligibility Tool. The funding is provided annually from April to March. At the beginning of the fiscal year, the family determines, with the assistance of their Service Coordinator, how much funding will be allocated to each quarter. Once determined, a contract is signed. Any unused funds in one quarter cannot be carried over to the next; these funds will be used to help serve new families entering the system.
Please Note: In order to serve as many people as possible, the maximum amount of funding that may be approved can vary from year to year.
