CHAP providers help families by promoting active living for children and adults with developmental disabilities while providing parental relief. Providers who are registered with the CHAP Program are connected with families looking to hire/contract respite services. Important: CHAP workers are
not employees of the CHAP Program, respiteservices.com, or Northumberland Family Respite Services (host agency).
Important: Employee or self-employed?
When a family hires/contracts your services, it is important to decide and understand whether you would be considered an employee or a self-employed individual in that particular arrangement. Employment status directly affects a person’s entitlement to employment insurance(EI) benefits under the Employment Insurance Act. It can also have an impact on how a worker is treated under other legislation such as the Canada Pension Plan and the Income Tax Act. The facts of the working relationship as a whole decide your employment status. For more information you can download and review Canada Revenue Agency's Guide,
Employee or Self-employed?
If you have any concerns regarding your status, you also may choose to seek legal advice before entering into any agreements with families who wish to use your services.
