Community Helpers for Active Participation (CHAP)/ respiteservices.com facilitates the connection of families with direct respite support providers based on the families' needs and the providers' experience and availability. The York Region branch of CHAP is hosted within York Support Services Network (YSSN). It is important to understand that respite providers are not employees of CHAP or YSSN. They are considered self employed, independent contractors or employees, who are contracted to provide support directly to individual(s). Families will independently contract with the respite support provider to determine if they are entering an employer/employee relationship or a contracted service arrangement. It is the responsibiliy of the family or caregiver to select, interview and hire their own direct respite support provider(s).
You can learn more about how a Respite/Direct Support Provider might be characterized by visiting the following websites:
All Direct Respite Support Providers are screened at the time of registration. The CHAP coordinator will collect (2) professional references, a current resume and a Vulnerable Sector Police Check (no older than six months). All registrants are also required to attend a CHAP program introduction session.
